Learn what an IP camera is, how it sends video over a network, what makes it different from analog CCTV and webcams, and what you need to record it.
An IP camera combines a camera sensor, video processor, network interface and software in one device. The sensor captures the scene. The camera then converts the image into digital video, compresses it with a codec such as H.264 or H.265, and makes one or more video streams available over the network.
Because the camera is a network device, it normally has its own local IP address. A recorder or surveillance program connects to that address, authenticates when necessary, receives the video stream and decides what to do with it: show live video, save recordings, analyze motion, generate notifications, or provide remote viewing.
The word IP means Internet Protocol, but an IP camera does not have to send video to the public Internet. A perfectly useful system can operate only on a local network. The camera and recording PC can communicate through the same router or network switch even when cloud storage is not involved.

Neither architecture is automatically better for every installation. Existing coaxial wiring can make an analog upgrade practical, while IP cameras are attractive when you want network-based management, higher-resolution streams, PoE, flexible recording software, or integration between products from different vendors.
A webcam is usually a USB or built-in camera attached directly to one computer. An IP camera is a network device that can be physically far from the recording PC as long as the network can carry the stream.
For a single room, an existing USB webcam can be a simple surveillance source. For entrances, garages, offices, shops or multiple rooms, IP cameras are usually easier to place because the video travels over the network rather than through a USB cable. Security Eye supports both approaches, so you can mix network cameras and webcams in the same Windows-based monitoring setup when that makes sense.
Power over Ethernet allows compatible cameras to receive network data and electrical power through one Ethernet cable when connected to a suitable PoE switch or injector. This can simplify installation because the camera does not need a nearby mains adapter.
ONVIF defines interoperability specifications and profiles for IP-based physical security products. In practical terms, compatible surveillance software can use ONVIF capabilities to discover devices and work with standardized video or control features. Conformance is profile-specific, so an ONVIF label alone does not promise that every feature is shared between every product. See ONVIF Profiles and our guide to ONVIF vs RTSP.
RTSP is commonly used to establish and control streaming sessions. A camera manufacturer may document an RTSP URL for a main stream and another for a lower-resolution substream. The path is vendor- and model-specific, so copying a URL from an unrelated camera is unreliable.
An NVR (network video recorder) is a device or software system designed to receive and record network-camera streams. VMS means video management software. A Windows program such as Security Eye can perform many of the jobs people associate with an NVR: viewing cameras, recording video, detecting motion, scheduling monitoring and providing remote web access.
Some do and some do not. A camera may support a microSD card, internal storage, a NAS destination, a manufacturer cloud service, an NVR, PC software, or several of these at the same time. The fact that a camera can produce a network stream does not guarantee that it stores video locally.
If you record to a Windows PC, the camera sends its stream across the local network and the surveillance software writes recordings to disk. This can be a useful alternative to a dedicated recorder, especially when you already have a PC that can remain on while monitoring is required.

No. For local viewing and local recording, the camera generally only needs a working connection to the same local network as the recorder or viewer. Internet access becomes relevant when you use cloud services, manufacturer relays, off-site notifications, remote access or firmware services.
Keeping local camera traffic local can reduce dependence on an Internet connection. If you do enable remote access, treat the camera system as a sensitive network service: use strong unique passwords, keep firmware and software updated, and avoid exposing unnecessary administration interfaces to the public Internet.
